Clemens Continues to Spin
Written by Sal Primonta on 01/09/2008

Was that roid rage we witnessed Monday in Houston when Roger Clemens went on his tirade against reporters? Just kidding. Don't tell the Rocket I said that.
Despite his best intentions, assuming for a second Clemens has anything besides self-interest intentions, the Rocket came across Monday looking like a petulant child. The controversial pitcher may have gotten up on stage and create a maelstrom of distractions, spitting venom at local reporters and wondering how dare anyone question his integrity, but he still did nothing substantial to clear his name. All he did was execute a PR stunt most likely devised by his high-paid legal team.

The fact remains that following the Mitchell Report, Clemens sat and waited weeks before he spoke to the media, only dishing out information on YouTube and offering a lame attempt at refuting the charges in his unsatisfying interview with Mike Wallace on "60 Minutes." All of this he did with lawyers whispering in his ear and the smug contentiousness with which he has handled the media for years. And after it was all said, or scripted as it were, and done, there still seems to be no clear proof from Clemens of his innocence or any valid attempt at answering questions.

Protest as vehemntly as he does while trying with his recent taped conversation to discredit trainer Brian McNamee , Clemens still has done nothing to clear his name.

What Clemens has done is the text book behavior of someone who is trying to hide something.

Why did Clemens even play the tape of McNamee? Was it to get him to apologize to Clemens for lying to Mithcell? Doesn't appear so, goad him as he might. Was it to creat reasonable doubt about McNamee's character? Most likely.

The tape did absolutley nothing to prove Clemens' innocence or McNamme's guilt. Yet Clemens responded after the tape as if he had just shown a smoking gun to reporters. It's like a paranoid husband who's been accused of cheating and having secret phone conversations with a lover clear his phone records from his cell phone, then show his wife that his cell phone has no outgoing calls on it, slamming the phone to the floor and walking out. Sometimes crazy people think if they act crazy enough they can just divert the other party's attention from the truth. Unfortunately for Clemens, the public and media are not as stupid as that jilted wife.

The tape proved nothing. If anything, it proved that McNamee had told the truth to Mithcell. Why elese would he tell Clemens he would go to jail for him? Wasn't that statement an obvious implication that he'd be willing to lie to a grand jury and perjur himself?

So now, weeks after the Mitchell Report has come out, we're left with one prideful would-be Hall of Famer indignantly casting aspersions at reporters and asking why he has not been given a fair shake. We're left with a troubled informant, McNamee, who looks like he's got no positive resolution in site personally or professionaly. And we're left with more questions than ever.

Good try, Rocket, but it's going to take a lot more than smoke and mirrors, your histrionics and a great legal team to make this mess go away. Eventually the only antidote to any of it will  be the truth.
